家住辛辛納提市的芭芭拉.漢森女士是一位坐在輪椅上的殘疾人，但在為她專門設(shè)計的廚房里，她仍然可以得心應(yīng)手地為全家人準備晚餐。洗菜池和爐灶底下是留空的，方便她的輪椅進出，所有的把手都是長條形的，她可以輕松地開啟。工作臺的高度也做了調(diào)整。
我曾在1998年10月去過羅得島設(shè)計學(xué)院，去參加那一年的美國全國藝術(shù)和設(shè)計院校委員會的年會，另外一個目的就是想去見見哈里森。沒有想到他在9月22日去世了。后來，我在美國國家設(shè)計博物館的庫帕－修維特畫廊（the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum ），看到了那個“全廚房”，那是在10月末了。在展覽的留言本上，許許多多的觀眾寫下了對這位“全設(shè)計”開創(chuàng)者的哀悼和懷念。
有關(guān)“全設(shè)計”的國家標準現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)比較普遍了。英語中，國家標準叫做“national legislation”，是由各個國家、地區(qū)提出、并通過立法形成的設(shè)計標準規(guī)范，這些法規(guī)主要是為了保護殘疾人士的公平權(quán)益而形成的。下面這四個國家法規(guī)是目前比較完善的全設(shè)計標準：
澳大利亞殘疾人士反歧視法（Australian Disability Discrimination Act 1992 ）
加拿大的安大略殘疾人士法（Canadian Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act of 2005 ）；
美國殘疾人士法（United States Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 ，其中，Section 508 Amendment 是1973年版本的殘疾人法的修正案the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 ）
英國殘疾人反歧視法（United Kingdom Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and 2005 ）。
